This movie is delicious on all counts, even as history. All the technical aspect of film-making (in 1944) are first rate. The music is among the best of all musicals (and do NOT overlook "You and I" and "Over the Banister" two undeservedly unknown beauties.
"Look" especially for the lace curtain across Judy's face after "The Boy Next Door" the light thru the dining room windows as it changes in the telephone scene (gorgeous lighting throughout the film) the props and clothing through the whole film.
Never doubt that film companies had access to real history. Many of the people involved were alive in 1903, including Sally Benson the author. Read the book. Under the light exterior lives some deep truth.

So here it is. "Meet Me in St. Louis" is about the Smith family that are living in St. Louis at the time of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition World's Fair in 1904. I don't find anything groundbreaking about this movie, because of the amount of praise it gets. Don't get me wrong, I like the movie but I don't think its a masterpiece or anything like that. For what it is, I think its fine and it is indeed watchable. The cast in this movie are good, especially for Judy Garland; although I like her more when she was in "The Wizard of Oz. " I do love the film's cinematography and its setting. I really do enjoy the atmosphere of St. Louis as you go on out and have a wonderful time. The movie is also well directed and well written. The movie itself is not really a Christmas movie, but at the end, it does somehow leave you that Christmas feeling as Garland sings wonderfully with the song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; the songs in the film are fine too. Again, there is nothing groundbreaking about it but I do think it is a fine relaxation of a movie as you just want to enjoy the atmosphere of St. Louis. So that is what I thought of "Meet Me in St. Louis, and I give it an 8 out of 10. People find some parts of this story hard to believe but some things I know to be very that generation, people could actually be dying and the doctors and family members would keep the truth from them. Also, I've been a Christian for almost 40 years and have seen generosity on the same level of Mr. Bogardus (and even greater. Don't be afraid to ask God for the Amazing. He longs to fulfill the dreams of His beloved children. I believe it actually delights God when we have enough faith to ask Him for the impossible. Finally, bitterness is a horrible prison to live in but praying for the person who has hurt you is a crucial first step to being freed from it. If you don't want to watch a film unless it is contemporary and realistic, you should give this a miss. If that's not the case, however, Meet Me in St. Louis is eminently worth watching. Yes, the setting and characterizations are completely idealized and even hokey, but the gorgeous Technicolor gives it a holiday card flavor and the acting is above reproach. The Christmas montage, beginning from Judy Garland's definitive rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and culminating in Margaret O'Brien's destruction of her beloved snowmen while sobbing hysterically, is an absolute classic. If you can watch this scene (especially knowing how Vincente Minelli evoked such an emotional response from O'Brien) and NOT be moved, this is probably not the right movie for you. Treat this film as if it were a greeting card: savor the bright colors and the sappiness, and don't look for deep meaning or symbolism. I was born 40 years to late and in the false country.
